Healthy Kids in 2019

Getting my girls to eat healthy has been such a struggle. Sometimes, getting them to eat at all is difficult. It's ironic because I breastfed both girls, and introduced them to all the fruit and vegetable purees as soon as I could. I tried so hard to give them the best possible start. Before I knew it their meals consisted of waffles, macaroni, and pizza. Where did I go wrong? 

Part of the problem is their age I suppose. Most toddlers and kids are somewhat picky eaters. But I believe most of the issue is that I just got lazy. Let's be honest here. I didn't want to take the time and didn't have the patience to encourage new, healthy foods. Dinner was miserable for everyone because they would just cry about what was on their plate. It seemed easier to just throw some grilled cheese their way and call it good. This has been a personal #momfail of mine.


I'm going to do better. 

Health and fitness are priorities for me and my husband. We want our girls to grow up with knowledge of nutrition. A healthy mind and body is one of the greatest gifts to yourself. I want that for our babies. At some point, they will be grown and have to make their own diet and exercise choices. But I want to know that I did the best I could at helping them towards a healthy future.

That all starts at home. What food behaviors do you model? Kids watch and mimic everything we do. I have to be real with myself. Am I snacking on fresh fruits and vegetables? Taking the time to meal prep and cook clean meals? Or am I grabbing boxes of instant macaroni out of the pantry, and sneaking handfuls of leftover Christmas candy. (I'm Guilty.)

What about exercise? I don't like to admit it, but I spend a lot of time sitting down on my phone or laptop. We need more hands-on, physical activities, and way less screen time. After dinner, we're going to get up and do something. Whether that's going to the park, taking a family walk, or even playing a board game as a family. Anything besides turning on the tv, and doing nothing. I'm going to be more intentional about this in 2019.

I know I'm not always going to be a perfect example of health and wellness. But I do know that my personal best is so much better than what I've been bringing to the table. (Literally. Haha!) One of my resolutions this year is to improve our nutrition at home. I need to stop being lazy, and provide decent meals and snacks for my family. That is one of my greatest responsibilities as a mother.

I want to share these plates, because they've already helped us so much! My mom got them for the girls, and they are awesome. I have the pickiest kids, but they get so excited about eating when I break these out. I will link them at the bottom!

You fill the spaces up with healthy options, and as soon as they are finished, they get to open the little box which contains some kind of reward. Each space also has cute pictures and words, so kids are encouraged to empty those spaces to reveal the illustration. Lux has the dinosaur one, and Thea has the pirate one.  


Example: We had "BBQ Chicken Salad" for dinner this week. I just took ingredients from that, and added them to their plates. (Blueberries, blackberries, tortilla strips, avocado, shredded bbq chicken, colby jack cheese, black beans, corn, and a hershey kiss for the reward!)
